Skin Care Tips from our Lead Chemist

Curious about the mind of a skin care chemist? Let’s help ease your mind. We asked our Product Development Associate and Chemist Giselle Dalmage to give us the inside scoop on her at-home skin routine as well as some key skin tips to keep your skin glowing and healthy. Let’s dive in!

“I’ve always been complimented on how great my skin looks and people frequently ask what kind of products I use on my skin. My secret to having flawless skin lies in a consistent skin care routine in addition to using products that compliment my skin type.”

Giselle’s Skin Type

“I have a combination of both dry and oily skin and sometimes it may be on the drier side depending on the season. I therefore tend to gravitate towards more hydrating skin care products. I also try to keep my routine very simple because it can get a little overwhelming trying to keep up with multiple skin care products.”

Giselle’s Everyday Routine

“I usually start my day by thoroughly cleansing my skin. My go-to cleanser is the Clean and Clear Morning Burst facial cleanser and it is probably one of the most refreshing facial cleansers that I’ve ever used. It contains vitamin C and ginseng as well as amazing bursting beads that gently exfoliate my skin. It also has an invigorating citrus scent that wakes me up and most importantly, it does not dry out my skin.

After cleansing, I follow up with the holy grail of moisturizers – my Rose & Abbot personalized moisturizer. It is formulated with amazing plant based ingredients that are customized to suit my skin type. My moisturizer contains hyaluronic acid which keeps my skin super hydrated. It also contains avocado and goji berry extracts which boost collagen production and helps to maintain my skin’s firmness and youthful appearance. I also add a few drops of my rose hip oil serum which gives my skin extra moisture and an added glow.”

“I cannot stress enough how important it is to protect your skin from the harmful rays of the sun which cause premature aging. I usually add a layer of the Neutrogena anti-wrinkle, broad spectrum SPF moisturizer on top of my Rose and Abbot moisturizer. It locks in the goodness of my Rose and Abbot moisturizer while protecting my skin from sun damage.”

A Nighttime Bonus

“At night, I cleanse with the Clean and Clear night relaxing deep clean face wash. It contains deep sea minerals & sea kelp extract that deeply cleanse my pores and gets rid of oil and impurities that build up throughout the day. It also has calming aromas that help me unwind after a long day.”

Self-Care Sunday Holy Grail

“On self care Sundays I add an extra step to my skin care routine. After cleansing I use the Fresh Rose Face Mask. The rose fragrance smells amazing and it really hydrates and tones my skin, leaving it soft and silky.”

Giselle’s 5 Skin Tips

  1. Double cleanse your skin. Cleansing your skin twice, will ensure the removal of all the oil, dirt, bacteria and pollutants that have built up on your skin. This leaves a clean canvas for your daytime or night-time skin care routine.
  2. Limit the amount of product used on the skin. Less is definitely more when it comes to applying skin care products such as your moisturizer. Only a certain amount of product can penetrate the skin at any one time. Using too much can potentially block your pores and cause breakouts. It is also a waste of product and money. As a rule of thumb, a pea sized amount of product should be sufficient for your entire face.
  3. Layer your skin care products in the correct order. Apply lightweight formulas to your face first so that they can easily penetrate the skin. Applying a heavier formula first could block lighter weight products from penetrating the skin, making them less effective. Applying your serum before your moisturizer is a great example of correctly layering your skin care products.
  4. Resist the urge to pop those pimples. Popping your pimples could result in the spread of bacteria which could further irritate your skin and possibly cause scarring.
  5. Maintain a healthy diet. You are what you eat and your skin’s health is a reflection of your diet. Drinking lots of water is extremely important in maintaining great skin. It flushes out toxins, delivers nutrients to your cells and keeps your skin hydrated. Avoid sugary, oily foods and opt for foods rich in healthy fats and omega-3 fatty acids. They help with the production of collagen in your skin, leaving your skin smoother, more supple and moisturized.
